Selling Through WhatsApp and Quote Forms From a Catalog Site
How a product catalog site sells without a cart: a click to chat link per product, a quote form or quote basket, and a process for closing the sale by message.

You can sell from a catalog site with no cart by giving every product a way to start a conversation: a WhatsApp link that opens a chat with the product already named, or a quote form or quote basket that sends you a list of what the visitor wants. The site does the showing. You do the closing. This works for local shops, services, custom work and anything priced by the job, and it stops working when you can no longer answer every message by hand.
This post is part of our guide to Catalog-First E-commerce.
Chat or form: which one to use
| Use WhatsApp or another chat app if... | Use a quote form or basket if... |
|---|---|
| Buyers are consumers or small shops | Buyers are companies with a purchasing process |
| Questions are short: size, color, date, delivery | Requests are detailed: quantities, specs, drawings |
| Your market lives in chat apps | Your buyers expect email and a written quote |
| One person answers from a phone | Several people share the requests |
| A quick reply closes the sale | The price needs work before you can send it |
Many sites need both: chat for quick questions, a form for real orders. Put the one that fits most buyers on the product button and the other one a step away.
Why a conversation beats a cart for some products
A cart assumes the buyer knows what they want and only needs to pay. Many small businesses do not sell that way. A tile shop needs the room size. A printer needs the artwork. A bakery needs the date. A furniture maker needs to say the lead time is six weeks before the customer gets attached. For those sales, a cart creates an order you then have to call about anyway. A message skips that step.
Buyers are used to it, and in many countries a chat is the normal way to reach a small business. The cost is plain: every sale needs a reply, and a message at 11pm waits until morning. Treat the chat as a sales channel with office hours, and say so on the page.
Pick the app your buyers already use
In India, Brazil, Indonesia and Mexico, and across much of Africa, the Middle East, Turkey and southern Europe, WhatsApp is the usual way to reach a small business. In India and Brazil the payment can even happen inside the chat, per Infobip's WhatsApp payments documentation. LINE is the default in Japan, Taiwan and Thailand; Messenger and Instagram messages are common for brands that sell through social posts; Telegram is widely used in parts of Eastern Europe and Central Asia; and in the US and northern Europe many buyers still expect a phone number or an email.
The method is the same whichever app you use: a button on the product page that opens a conversation about that product.
WhatsApp click to chat on a product page
WhatsApp's click to chat link opens a chat with your number without the visitor saving it first, with a message already typed in the chat box, per WhatsApp's help page. The number goes in the link in full international format.
That pre-filled message is the whole trick. Fill it with the product name, the variant and the page address, so the first message you receive already tells you what the person is looking at:
Hello, I am interested in the Oak Side Table, 60 cm, from yoursite.com/products/oak-side-table.
Where to put it. On the product page, as the main button or next to the price. A floating WhatsApp button on every page is good for general questions, but the product button is the one that carries the product name.
What to tell the visitor. Your reply hours, your language, and whether the chat leads to a quote or a payment link.
The Business app or the Business Platform
Most small sellers start with the free WhatsApp Business app on a phone: a business profile, a catalog inside WhatsApp, quick replies, labels and an away message. That is enough for one or two people answering by hand.
The WhatsApp Business Platform, used through Meta's API or a provider, is for teams, shared inboxes and automation. It is paid per message for messages the business starts; replies to customers who wrote to you first are where most catalog conversations happen, per Meta's pricing documentation. Start with the app; move to the platform when more than one person needs the same inbox.
WhatsApp's business policy excludes some categories, such as alcohol, tobacco and some supplements, even where selling them is legal, per WhatsApp's Business Policy. Check your range before you build the sale around chat.
Quote forms and quote baskets

A quote form is a short form on the product page: name, contact, quantity, the question. A quote basket goes a step further. The visitor adds several products to a list, then sends the whole list with one message. It behaves like a cart with no prices and no checkout, and it suits work that is priced after you look at it: packaging, signage, catering, custom joinery, wholesale orders.
A real example. Unika Plastik, a PET bottle manufacturer in Istanbul whose site is built with Beste, lists 125 bottles and caps with no prices. Every product button says "Add to quote list". A cosmetics brand can add a 250 ml bottle, a 100 ml bottle and the matching pumps, then send one request and get one quote. For buyers who are not ready to order, a "Request a sample" button in the header opens a short form in a window, so they ask without leaving the product they were looking at. The form ends with a data protection consent box, which Turkish law requires.

Fields that pay for themselves on a quote form:
- Product and variant, filled in from the page the visitor was on.
- Quantity, with your minimum order shown next to it.
- Deadline or delivery date. It changes the price more than anything else.
- Delivery area or postcode, if you deliver.
- Preferred reply channel: email, phone or chat.
- One free text field. People will use it for the thing you forgot to ask.
Keep it short. Every extra field loses some requests, and anything you did not ask you can ask in the reply.
The reply is the product
The site does not close the sale. The reply does, and speed matters more than polish. Research on online leads published in Harvard Business Review found that companies that answered within an hour were far more likely to turn the lead into a real conversation than those that waited a day, per The Short Life of Online Sales Leads. A lead goes cold fast.
- Answer in the same channel. If the lead came by WhatsApp, reply there. If it came by form, reply by email and offer the chat.
- Send the next step as a link. For a fixed-price item, send a payment link and the sale is done inside the conversation. See payment links plus a product catalog.
- Write the quote once and reuse it. Keep a template per product family. A quote that goes out in ten minutes beats a perfect one tomorrow.
I have watched more than one client lose this battle not on the website but on the phone that nobody checked between 5pm and 9am. Decide who answers before you add the button.
Before you add the button
- Decide who answers, and when.
- Pick the app your buyers already have open.
- Pre-fill the message with the product name, the variant and the page address.
- Tell the visitor your reply hours, language, and what happens next.
- Check your range against WhatsApp's Business Policy.
- Plan to confirm every agreed sale by email or invoice.
Records and the paper trail
Confirm every agreed sale by email or invoice, with the price, the delivery date and your return terms in writing. In the EU, sales to consumers at a distance come with information duties and, in most cases, a 14-day right of withdrawal, per Your Europe, whether the sale was agreed in a cart or in a chat. Messages and form submissions hold personal data, so keep them where you can find, export and delete them on request.
Where this model breaks
- Volume. Past a certain number of messages a day, you need a cart or staff. You will feel it.
- Repeat buyers of the same item. They want to reorder without talking. Give them a payment link or a store.
- Fixed-price products sold far away. A buyer in another time zone will not wait for your morning. A payment link answers at 3am.
- Search results. Pages that sell by chat or quote get Google's product snippets rather than merchant listings, per Google's documentation.
If you want to keep the brand site and move fixed-price items to a real checkout, see the Shopify Buy Button or full Shopify.
How this works in Beste
In Beste, each product button can end in a different way. Point it at a WhatsApp chat link with the product name filled in, or at a phone number, and the visitor opens a conversation about that product. For work priced by the job, use the quote basket: the shopper adds what they need and sends the list to you. Add a form to the product page, or open one in a window from any button, for questions about availability, sizing or delivery. Forms are built in the editor and styled by your theme. Every submission is saved in your dashboard on every plan; on Pro, it is also sent to your email. The floating WhatsApp and call buttons come with Pro, Team and Business. Beste does not process payments and takes no commission. See Products Catalog and Dynamic Forms.
